Disaster in Devonshire- A Very British Civil War game with the Combat Patrol rules

The situation in the River Otter Valley continues to deteriorate. The various rebel factions are facing increased pressure from government troops. Lord Otterford, Archibald Royston, has called a family meeting in town to try to bring some order to the forces supported by his immediate family. His wife, Miriam, and her Albertine supporters are at odds with his sister Katherine's reds. Escorted by the River Otter Valley Local Defense Brigade (ROVLDB) ceremonial guards, the family is meting at the local pub. The town militia consisting of the police, fire brigade, and postal guards are positioned to keep the peace.

Meanwhile, a platoon of territorial troops have been dispatched to establish a garrison in town. Led by the young Lieutenant Neville Abernathy, the troops consist of regulars, territorials, and a smattering of drafted British Union of Fascists recruits. Abernathy's troops advance from the outskirts of town with three sections abreast, covered by the 2" mortar team.

Abernathy's platoon approches from the outskirts

The defenders don't want to start a battle.

A quick advance along the line.

Police set up on the hill, covering the road.

Hearing that the enemy is in sight, Lord Otterford breaks up the meeting and sends the family to take up positions.

Bold advance in the center. The center section gets spooked an fires on the house to their front as they move through the orchard.

Return fire from the postal inspectors pins down a team behind the wall.

The mortar sets up in the tree cover...

...and gentlemanly fire into the town!

The ROVLDB guards charge into an enemy section.

A costly melee ensues...the Guards are victorious!

But on the other flank, the police are under heavy fire on the hill.

And the attack in the center is stalled.

Civilians are running for cover.

The right flank attackers are in trouble.

Abernathy take matters into his own hands, leading the attack in the center to regain the initiative.

Trading casualties on the hill.

The civilians are fleeing town.

The Guards charge again!

Taking more prisoners.

"Red" Kate is directing the counter-attack around the flank.

The battle is rotating clockwise.

Police fall back under pressure.

Abernathy recklessly charges the house.

Refugees gather outside town.

Abernathy's command group kicks in the door and catches Otterford unprepared...the Lord is down!

The flank attack is slowly moving into position...will it be too late?

Casualty clearing station is getting busy.

Abernathy is on a rampage...his troops secure prisoners.

The towns folk in hiding.

The Guards escort their prisoners to the rear.

Miriam tries to rescue her husband but she is shot down by the vile (and wounded) Lieutenant!

Another tea, secures the next house.

And set up a Lewis gun on the hill.

The mortar team repositions to cover the flank.

Kate is too late to catch the mortar team.

Lewis gun in action.

Objectives secured.

Miriam is pulled to safety.

The Vicar checks on Miss Marple.

POWs on the move.

What is the fate of Lord Otterford?

A cracking solo game as a test for a multi-player game I plan to host in December at home. This will set the scenario for the next game...is a rescue mission in order? Can Kate and Miriam cooperate for the Archibald's sake? Is the River Otter Valley in danger of falling into Fascist hands?

October 2024

A new chapter in life should be a boon for the hobby. I retired from the Army at the end of September and we are settling into a new pace.

Fun sci fi game at the club and I have started  a VBCW game with Combat Patrol using the figures I painted this month and the new set of buildings.

The figures are from a box each of BEF and WWI British, painted with a slight mix of uniforms for a VBCW look.
Th buildings are the entire 28mm pre-painted/printed MDF range from Micro Arts Studios.

Started work on updating my storage...my individually mounted figures need some magnetic bases and I still have to source some ferro sheets for the plastic storage bins.

Next up: Two boxes of Saxons/Vikings for my generic fantasy project. I have a batch of Quar that I received as a present but I am waiting to buy one more group to tackle them together.

Researching some more on 3D resin printers.  I could then print my own Quar and maybe try my 3rd version of the 6mm sci fi project.

September 2024

Although I missed the club game day again this month (I will be there in October!), I did make some nice hobby progress and spent only $11.

I finished the Burrows and Badgers project...until they release more.

I also put together more of the Micro Arts Studio 28mm pre-colored MDF building. They are very nice. I picked up the whole Normandy collection at Historicon. I’ll post a shot of them all when built.

Next up for painting...two boxes of 28mm plastic BEF and WW1 Brits for use in the AVBCW project.

I may try to host a game with that collection using Combat Patrol rules in November or December.

I have also committed to running a Pulp game for the club in Feb.

Defending the river line- A Quar in Command battle

After being out maneuvered and out fought in several engagements, the 78th final stopped the Crusader aggression for now along a river tributary. The Coftyran defenders were well emplaced with a dug in position on the hill  in front of their camp. They even had an armored car in support, if they could just get the sleeping crew out of their tents (had to use a Chain of Command dice to mount up).

The Crusaders established their own base of fire, but were being out fought by the Coftyrans in the trenches. They then tried to maneuver on the left flank to infiltrate (it is a probe scenario) the Coftyran lines.

It was not to be...the defenders established a strong position in the woods covering several avenues of approach. Once the crew got the armored car running and machinegun firing, Crusader casualties mounted.

A last ditch effort to charge through the defending lines was massacred in the open.

Crusaders: 25 casualties

Coftyrans: 13 casualties

Chain of Command is giving great games. As I build up the forces a little more, plus some supports, things should even out even more.

Good defensive ground.

Crusaders make a push on the left flank.

Two sections with support will make the attack.

Base of fire is taking casualties.

Defending in good cover.

That is a lot of open ground to cover.

Defenders are not immune.

Ambush!

Second prong of the attack gets into position.

A chance for a final push.

Slaughter in the center.

View from the armored car.

Cover with smoke!

Pulling back into cover.

Bastion position in the woods.

Crusaders caught in crossfire.

A solid Coftyran win.

Burrows and Badgers

I finished the last 26 of the Burrows and Badgers figures. Fantastic miniatures with such character.

I've played a few solo games, good fun. A second addition is in the works. A great small scale skirmish game...could be a good gateway for younger players.

I'll continue to collect any new figures as they are released, with the goal of painting them in the month received to keep the collection up to date.

August 2024

A quiet month due to work. I missed the club game and did not get a chance to start any solo games until the last week.

Finished the second to last batch of Burrows and Badgers figures. September focus will be on the final set, and then the 60 or so figures for AVBCW in October.
