My son and I played our first battle using the space ships I painted up last year using the Starmada rules. Made a change to the movement system to use a "manuever" chart from Check Your 6!
Each force had a frigate, destroyer, light cruiser, and heavy cruiser. My side had longer range weapons, but he had heavier shields (and they paid off).
He destroyed 3 of my 4 ships by closing quickly and shrugging off my horrible long range missle rolls.
