2010 was a big year in painting, but only so-so for gaming. I hope to balance things out more in 2011 but I do still have a load of lead on hand.
Overall Plans:
1- Attend the 3 HMGS conventions
2- Spend less- focus on accessories vs lead and terrain
3- Complete several projects before starting any new ones

PROJECT STATUS
Flames of War: Mature - I have two large company plus size forces painted. I may purchase an item at each convention, but my pledge is to paint any FoW items within 30 days of purchase.
Modern Skirmish: In Progress- Lots of figures painted. I use Flying Lead rules by Ganesha Games. This is my go to project to play with my son when not playing the Memior '44 board game. I just bought the last of the Rebel Mini figures I want and I plan to pick up a helo and two HMMWVs at Cold Wars (QRF?). This project has one month of painting to become mature.
Imagi-Nation: In Progress. I expect to mature this project in the first half of the year. I will always continue to build as this is what started it all for me, but I will have plenty of units done for now.
Space Ships: In Progress. Have not played a game yet...but I expect to get these done before Summer as they are simple to paint, and are already primed. I need to buy some fighter stands.
Splintered Light: In Progress. My favorite figures. Need to get a game with these guys played. This is a slow and steady project just for fun.
Ancient Imagi-Nation: Ready to start. My next big project. I have figures on hand but I am not going to start until I mature the projects listed above.
Pirates: Ready to start. Figures are all on hand, but I am not going to start until 2012. I do have my eyes on some of the Old Glory ships to join the pirates.
Wild West: Future. No figures yet...I like the Blue Moon figures and may pick them up at Historicon if I finish some of the other projects.
Sci-Fi Skirmish: Future. Recently getting interested in starting 15mm Sci-fi for skirmish and squad type battles. Lots of nice figures, and some would work well as a "near-future" setting with my modern skirmish figures.
2011 PLANS
January

1- 8 x 8 figure imagi-nation cavalry units

The 2011 plan is much more loose and fluid than my projected plans from August of 2010. I expect to only paint about 50% of the # of miniatures as in 2010 so I can game more, and to avoid burn out.
PLANNED PURCHASES
1- Remaining items from the Miniature Building Authority 15mm range...want to have 1 of each
2- a few vehicles for FoW...Marders, PZ IV, US aircraft
3- a helo and couple of HMMWVs (look at QRF)

Escort Duty Battle Report
Played a game of Flying Lead with my son. This is the Ganesha Games skirmish game using the Song of Blades and Heroes rules. I took some ideas from the Hearts and Minds supplement too..I made a set of cards for events to happen as the game progressed. There are cards for the enemy to appear, civilians to show up, a news crew, IEDs, sniper attack...
A US squad (9 men) with attached medic has a mission to link up with an informant at the mosque and escort him back to the pick up point for a helicopter extraction. The objective is at the end of a dirt road running through a few buildings.
The squad moves out with the SAW gunners taking up positions on both flanks. SPC Jones checks out a parked truck...They can see the objective down the road...
BOOM! an IED blows up the truck but Jones escapes with a few bumps and bruises [lost by 1 but his body armor protected him]...
A news crew responds to the IED blast...
Locals come out to see what is happening...
SNIPER! a single shot rings out killing CPL Baker [rolled a 6 vs a 1]...
The news crew interviews one of the soldiers while also filming the dead body...
Despite the loss of Baker, the patrol links up with with informant and his body guards...
They move out to join up with the other fire team...
Just in time for some insurgents to come over the hill and block the path to the LZ...
BOOM! Another IED rips into the team. SPC Brown (medic) is killed while CPL Grant, a civilian, and one of the body guards go down wounded. The informant is unhurt but shaken from the blast...[this was a key part of the battle, I had drawn the card for this IED before and rolled to see how many turns before it went off (2)...the "civilian" who had been working by the truck had started running away when I drew the card as an indicator...my son picked up on the running but thought he was going to get more insurgents, not setting the bomb]
The insurgents wound SPC Smith and move in to take him prisoner...great fotage on the news...
AMBUSH! Insurgents open fire from the house by the IED site, wounding Staff Sergeant Bradley...With casualties out of hand, the squad calls in the helo to make a hasty pick-up...
The casualties are carried to the extraction point...
SPC Wayne earns the Silver Star for carrying the wounded CPL Grant to the dust-off...
The squad accomplishes the mission but at a heavy cost:
1 POW
2 KIA-missing
2 WIA
1 Died of Wounds (body guard)
This game was lots of fun even as things went south for my son's squad. The sniper shot was a lucky roll {after my son picked a card from the middle of the deck instead of taking from the top---his own fualt}, and the timing on the second IED as too funny. My son likes to ask to drive the trucks so they were a natural draw, and he took lots of time checking each building along the route {this caused extra card draws}.
I stopped pulling cards after the 2nd IED as things were getting very ugly. Tried to reinforce the need to not leave anyone behind, and he did have a collect all the wounded he could...but two were out of range, and the last was dead...he left him behind because the insurgents were closing on the LZ.

Fall In 2010
I attended a day of shopping at Fall In in Lancaster PA. This convention seemed much smaller than Historicon from July. The venue at Historicon (Valley Forge) was also better in my opinion and an hour closer to home. I am hoping them move all the HMGS conventions to Valley Forge.
No gaming this time, but I may stay overnight at the next Historicon and try to get in two games.
My loot:
- can of white Army Painter primer
-7 paint brushes
- 8 bottles of paint
- 24 x Falcon Sea People figures
- 24 x Egyption HeavyAxe figures
- 2 packs of 54mm plastic WW II figures for my son
- a Landing Craft from the flea market
- GE FS MG platoon
- GE FS mortar platoon
- 4 x GE half-tracks
- 2 x STUG III G
- US Rifle platoon
- US armored infantry dismounted machineguns
I could not find the 5 x M3 half-tracks for my son or the GE sniper group I wanted. Will order online.
A few things that caught my eye but I resisted:
Blue Moon Wild West
Viking Forge and Falcon ancients - lots of good options (female samuari!)
Old Glory ships for pirates
Paper Terrain
MBA- nice stuff coming in the spring

Nizzonds Volunteer Privateers
A motley collection of cutthroats and scallywags (plus a few pressed landlubbers). Based out of Port Nizzonds, this band of misfits is comprised of four companies each built around a noted privateer (pirate?) captain. Led by Commadore Christopher "Crimson Chris" Guspatcho, the corps makes up in fighting spirit what it lacks in discipline (and hygiene).
This is the 5th of the regiments provided by the navy.

US Rangers
Rangers for FoW. Got these primed black (poorly) in a trade along with some other items. They were already glued to the bases, but without much thought. I adjusted a few figures.
Plan on two more US infantry platoons (Rifle PLT and Armored Rifle PLT) for my son's force.

September 2010 Painting Report
A second great month in my year-long plan.
Imagi-nation:
4 x 12 figures infantry units: 48 points
Flames of War:
44 x US Para Platoon: 44 pts
31 x GE Panzer Grenadier Platoon: 31 pts
Skirmish:
13 x SL Hares: 13 pts
Not Complete:
Hare Fort --- delayed until properly motivated.
TOTAL: 137 points
Not much played on the gaming front. Did finish two Memior 44 games, and I have been drafting notes for the next imagi-nation campaign. Got an online map maker to help.
October Plan: ----adjusted a few things to paint what is already primed
2 x SL Bears
7 x SL Badgers (moved up from November)
17 x SL Rats
38 x US Ranger Platoon
(possibly- 4 x 12 figure Imagi-nation infantry units---may be in Nov)

Splintered Light Hares
Hares from Splintered Light Miniatures for use with Ganesha Games "Song of Blades and Heroes" rules. These have become my standard skirmish rules for all genres.
My son picked the hares as his warband, and selected the brown uniform with glor/blue shields. I added the carrot banner for flavor. The hares have the ability to make a leaping attack.

US Parachute Rifle Platoon
A US Parachute Rifle Platoon for my son. These were the first FoW figures I bought a year and a half ago just for him to play with. Painted in the late war uniform.

Random musings
September has started out well, painted 4 x 12 man imagi-nations units, and I will finish a US Para platoon for FoW tomorrow. Plan to knock out a GE grenadier platoon over the next week. That will leave me with teh 13 Hares from Splintered Light. I don't think I will get to the Hare Fort I have planned, but it will still cap two great months of painting.
I sold several hundred dollars of books and rules on TMP this month. I had gathered a collecting over the past few years while searching for the rules I wanted to use. I do like reading rules and seeing the concepts these use, but it was time to cull the herd. The benefit is that I then spent the money on painting and basing supplies, the final figures for my imagi-nation (for now!), and some terrain. I got the FoW Normandy beach defeses set...expensive, but it comes with some great bunkers that I can use with FoW and for skirmish gaming.
I also traded one book for several FoW items...got a great deal by getting 3 Shermans, a Ranger Platoon, a Fallschrimjager Platoon, and a US Armored Rifle Platoon.
While at work, I have drafted up some notes for my next imagi-nation campaign. It will be a multi-sided conflict in the Grand Dutchy of Hippo-Heimer just to the North of Katzenstein. Rather than a simple linear campaign, this one will involve some map moves and I want to incorporate the Mythic Game Generator into things for random events. I am still short on cavalry, so things will most likely kick off after I get them painted this winter.
Some thoughts on figures: When I started getting figures for my units, I was excited that there were all kinds of poses and unique sculpts. In hindsight, I like to have the units in the advancing pose and not have as many poses in the units. My units are mostly AB figures and Warmodelling/Fantassin figures with a few others thrown in. The AB figures can be bought individually, and that is nice. The Warmodelling come in packs of 8 for infantry...and 6 for command packs. This does force me to use an extra drummer in each unit to get a command stand and three line stands.
Colors: My imagination has troops in all kinds of colors. This is intentional even if it losses some continuity. I am trying out combinations for the future and I have found I like blues mixes with grey, white, or tan/brown for my units. I will keep this in mind when it comes time for my imagi-nation ancient troops.
Basing: I have been using pumice texture and static grass on the FoW bases. Looks good. I just bought some grass tufts to try out too. I am not sure about going back and texturing my imagi-nation figures. It would be a big project.
Rules: I have settled into some rules sets-
Skirmish: Song of Blades and Heroes (with varients)
WW II: Flames of War
Space ships: Starmada
Imagi-Nation: Carnage and Glory computer rules
Ancients: writing my own! Individual figures/losses.
---I like the Pique rules sets. May not use them exactly, but working some concepts into my ancients rules.
Photos: My camera skills are horrible. I need to go back and take new pictures of all the imagi-nation units.
Time to get painting.

August 2010 Painting Report
August has been a fantastic month on the painting front. I completed all the items on my plan, and started on those for September. These first two months are packed with painting and I had expected to have to slide some things to later in the Fall...but if I keep at it in September, things are looking great.
Imagi-nation:
3 x 12 figure Infantry units: 36 points
Flames of War:
121 x US Rifle Company figures: 121 points
96 x GE Fallschirmjager : 96 points
Other:
Otter Fort: 10 points
Painted the bases on about 60 bases of the imagi-nation OPFOR: 0 points
TOTAL: 253 points !!!
Plans for September are:
1) US Para Platoon
2) GE Grenadier Platoon (need to order 2 medium bases)
3) 4 x 12 figure Infantry units for Imagi-nation
4) 13 x Splintered Light Hares
5) Hare fort
Gaming:
Continued the skirmish game we have laid out in the basement. Need to finish this one.
Also got in a few games of Memior.
Purchases:
Nothing! For the first month since I started gaming/painting, I did not make any purchases. Since making my year-plan, I am going to watch what I buy so the lead mountain stays a mole hill.

Fallschrimjager Company
The second company for Flames of War troops...ready to battle the US Rifle Company I did for my son. Next up is a US Para Platoon and a GE Grenadier Platoon. Following those up with a US Rifle Platoon and GE Fallschrimjager Platoon to bring both companies up to three full platoons.
